Festivals

absorbing the atmosphere during a festival or celebration can be a great free way to remember a trip

Carnival and Marti Gras have come and gone but with them a tip. Travelling to place during an event or festival like Carnival or Marti Gras are likely to make the prices the travel and accommodation more expensive. But, consider that events like this bring great atmosphere and can mean there are a whole variety of free activities, parades, street performances, even walking through the city observing the costumes, and the partying can be fun. This is not the greatest plan if you have a long list sites you want to see, because they are more likely to be more crowed with other tourist.

It is, however a great way to enjoy unusual and lesser known destinations, for example:

Binche, in Belgium, hold their own Marti Gras as the culmination of a carnival festival complete with music, dancing and hundreds of mask and wooded shoe wearing clowns.

Aarhus, Denmark holds a yearly festival in August with a different theme each year, which brings both Danes and international visitors into the city centre for music, art, and theatrical shows.

Beziers, in southern France holds Feria, their take on the Spanish Corrida. In mid August bulling fighting, street music and four days of serious partying take over the city.

Cueno, Italy known mostly for its proximity to ski resorts holds a music festival in June, a cheese fair in November and the Annual Chestnut Festival where music and dancers entertain tourist as they enjoy roasted chestnuts and wine around 15 large fire.

Just walking along the streets can be fun when a city is transformed for a festival
